Why it matters

Tennis can transform lives – especially lives of vulnerable youth in the City of Chicago. Since 2019, USTA Chicago has been delivering no- and los-cost tennis instruction in Chicago parks to those who might not otherwise experience the sport.

Chicagoans need the positive impacts tennis provides. Too many people don’t have easy ways to access tennis.

36.2% of Chicago high school students and 61.2% of adults in the metropolitan area are overweight or obese and could benefit from tennis’ many health benefits.

The benefits of tennis are numerous, setting it apart from other sports.

+9.7 YEARs

Research shows that those who play tennis live up to 9.7 years longer than those who are sedentary.

56% risk

Playing tennis just 3 hours per week can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease by 56%.

+20% WELLNESS

Tennis players are also 20% more likely to report strong mental health than other sport and activity participants.

Playing tennis has a wide range of health benefits that make it an ideal physical activity for anyone, at any age.

Tennis serves up a healthy future for youth also. Research shows that young people who play tennis:

  • Are less likely to get into trouble at school
  • Are less likely to engage in risky behaviors like smoking or drinking
  • Spend more time doing homework
  • Exhibit higher self esteem and optimism
  • Are more likely to attend college
  • Experience lower rates of stress, anxiety, and depression
